Political: Strange Behavior

Now this is interesting. A Seattle Times story today claims that "State Democrats say their latest research shows that Republican Dino Rossi cannot overcome Gov. Christine Gregoire's 129-vote victory under any theory proposed in court." Let's for a moment assume that this is true. In fact, let's put ourselves in this imaginary situation for a time, for some indented role-playing.
blowing hot airOur party holds control of the state House and Senate, as well as having the sitting Governor. We just got through with a great legislative session where we passed a bunch of laws we've been working on for years. Finally we're able to shape up this State and punish evil, nasty habits. Those idiot Republicans are still pursuing their silly little court challenge to the Governor's race, but we know that it was a model election, and we have nothing to worry about. Not only that, but our math whiz friends just figured out that the Republicans' argument holds no water. They're 100% certain to lose this silly contest lawsuit.

Now, where should we go from here? Let's see... We could just go with the flow, follow through with our defense in the lawsuit, easily win, thus making public fools of the Republicans, cementing the total legitimacy of the Governor, and bolstering the people's support of us. Or, how about this? We could hold a press conference with former Governor Gary Locke and try to pressure the Republicans to drop the lawsuit! Yes, because if they drop the suit, we won't have to go through the bother of making giant fools of them in the court. What a timesaver that would be.
Right. See, I'm having a bit of a problem following the logic here. If they're so sure that they have this election contest lawsuit in the bag, why bother pleading with Dino Rossi to drop it? Wouldn't they just be dying to vindicate themselves and the "model election" in court, for everyone to see? If the Republicans dropped the suit now, lingering doubts about the Governor-for-now's legitimacy would still remain.

So, what we have here are three possible explanations, the way I see it.
  • The Democrats think there's a decent chance they might lose, so they are hoping to pressure Rossi and the Republicans into dropping it.
  • The Democrats don't really want Rossi to drop the suit at all, but they are so sure that they're going to win, that they are using this "plea" as a set-up to humiliate the Republicans even further after the contest fails.
  • Gary Locke has been infected by a brain leech.
Only time will tell...

The brain leech would certainly explain much of his activities as governor.
