The Sky Is Falling

Road fall down!Well okay, the sky isn't really falling. But apparently the roads are crumbling. Never mind the billions of Washington State taxpayer dollars that are currently spent on transportation. If we don't spend more money right now, our entire road system will collapse on itself. But don't take my word for it, I'll let one of our fine elected representatives tell you:
"If the gas tax is overturned, major bridges will not be repaired. You will not see congestion relief on (Interstate) 405. The Alaskan Way viaduct will be closed or will fall down."
- Rep. Ed Murray (D-Seattle), chairman of the House Transportation Committee.
He's referring to the No New Gas Tax drive to let the citizens of this state vote on how they will be taxed for transportation. If he really, truly believes what he's saying, then I suppose it makes sense that the legislator tacked an emergency clause onto the transportation package—which, by the way, conveniently takes away the right of the people pursue referendum—which, by the way, happens to require far fewer signatures to get on the ballot.

So you see, there's a good reason that the people shouldn't be allowed to have a say in this. The road is going to fall down! Don't you see? Who cares if it's your money that they're talking about? The sky is falling, here, and daddy government knows best! So quit your meddling, you kids!

Whatever you do, definitely don't get petitions from No New Gas Tax and fill them up with the signatures of your friends and neighbors (that are legally registered to vote). Just open your wallet and stay out of the government's business.

I'm really glad that I actually get sarcasm...

I also made a No New Gas Tax post today, just before viewing yours.

Now wait a minute... If the roads all crumble, doesn't that mean we can all stay home?

Hey, sounds good. EXCEPT for the fact that I adore Senator Val Stevens. She's terrific. I really admire her.
